Faking "custom" with Semihandmade
Our designer Megan introduced me to Semihandmade Doors, and I am in love!
We're installing a custom built-in in our living room. I didn't mind splurging there because the built-in needs to match the older style of the home, surround an upright piano, and hold up to daily use for jackets and shoes. Plus, it's in a highly visible part of the house. A custom built-in feels right for that space.
On the other hand, we don't want a custom built-in for the Nook. (The Nook is our converted garage that'll serve as a guest house, art studio, and family room.) We'd like 12' of floor-to-ceiling storage, which would cost $12k+ if ordered custom! It didn't seem worth it. Instead, we decided to buy wardrobes from Ikea.
Ikea sells modular wardrobes that we can mix and match to fill the space. They are convenient and budget-friendly. Nonetheless... I was a little hesitant. In my experience, Ikea doors look and feel flimsy, and they wear poorly over time. This is where Semihandmade Doors enters the picture. They sell upscale doors to put on Ikea cabinets and closets, lending a custom look to a budget purchase.
Check out these examples of Semihandmade cabinets. We'll have to wait at least 4 weeks to see ours installed, but I'm excited!
