Where to buy original art online
Ever since my first teenage paycheck, I've always saved my spare pennies for art. I've found many pieces that I love along the way (and, to be honest, made quite a few mistakes too). Here are a few of my favorite online galleries and artists.
Serena & Lily
Despite primarily being a furniture company, Serena & Lily runs an impressive online art gallery. They offer a curated selection of mid-range ($400-$2000) art pieces, representing contemporary artists as well as re-selling vintage art from the Lost Art Salon. Their art selection is refreshed every few months, and they offer a 20% off sale during the winter holidays.
My favorite artists represented by Serena & Lily are Paul Norwood, Nancy Tart, and Donna Walker. All three paint strong, vibrant landscapes.
Nahcotta
Nahcotta is a New Hampshire gallery that sells art online in two shops: the main Nahcotta gallery, and Enormous Tiny Art. The main gallery offers artwork at typical mid-range gallery prices, whereas Enormous Tiny Art focuses on smaller (and less-expensive) pieces. Both are high quality.
From Nahcotta, I really like Amy Brnger's dark florals, Kathleen Robbins' moody landscapes, and MJ Blanchette's impasto. (As an aside, I think MJ Blanchette and Paul Norwood's pieces would go well together in an American landscape collection.)
Etsy
Finding good art on Etsy is a challenge. Etsy is an uncurated marketplace with art of wildly varying quality and price ranges. I tend to look out for featured artists, which are usually of better quality. However, there are excellent artists on Etsy if you can find them. I particularly enjoy Kai Samuels-Davis's haunting (and unaffordable) portraits, John Larriva's much more affordably priced portraits, and Tali Yalonetski's sweet illustrations. You can also find work by gallery-represented artists (like Donna Walker or Ruth Shively) in their Etsy shops.
