Low-light bedrooms

Low-light bedrooms

What color should you paint a low-light bedroom? Our home is flooded with natural sunlight, except for the master bedroom.

It's tempting to paint the walls white. White walls are very chic right now, with house tours full of beautiful white-walled bedrooms that look light, bright, and airy in photographs:

A calm, white bedroom -- with huge windows that let in gorgeous light.

Unfortunately, white walls won't work in a low-light bedroom. In my experience, the end result is drab and dim. Without adequate light, a gorgeous white turns into a flat, bland, shadowy color. So I've reigned in my love of white bedroom walls.

Instead, I'm planning to paint our bedroom a mid-range blue tone. Our bathroom in a previous apartment was painted a mid-range blue-grey, and it held up to both sunshine and shadow marvelously. I want a shade of blue that softly deepens in the shadows, but doesn't overwhelm the room with color.
