Celebrating milestones

Celebrating milestones

This week brought big progress on our home renovation project. We hit three major milestones:

  • We have a roof! After living with a tarp atop rafters for a month, our roof is once again whole. The final product is anti-climactic because the new roof looks the same, but it's much healthier now. We replaced rotten rafters and eaves, took off 3 previous layers of uneven roofing, and installed appropriate flashing and gutters. It should be in good shape for another 35 years.
  • We have heat and air conditioning in the Nook! We tore out an aging wall heater and overpowered air conditioner. Then we shivered for a week when the weather changed. Now we have a Daikin ductless minisplit that provides both heat and air conditioning reliably and efficiently.
  • Our living room is no longer full of siding! Decades of deferred maintenance left our old growth redwood siding in need of a facelift. Most of the damage was purely cosmetic (due to peeling paint), but some of the siding needed to be replaced. A local wood shop milled custom siding to match the existing siding, and then it sat piled in our living/dining room for five weeks. Now it's happily installed where it belongs -- on the side of our house.

My mom and sister came to town just in time to see the results, so we had celebratory hot chocolate this morning.

Mmmmm, homemade Mexican hot chocolate in my new Jessica Wertz mugs.

I'm thrilled to see progress. It feels like maybe there is an end in sight!
